How To Quit Smoking : Some Tips

How To Quit Smoking : Some TipsThe first tobacco plants are thought to have grown sometime around 6000BC. It was five thousands years later that men first started smoking and chewing the tobacco plant. This happened in the Central America, and the first people to smoke are thought to be the Mayans. More than 2500 years later, in 1595, appears the first book about tobacco, called Tobacco. In 1600, the Pope himself forbade tobacco and smoking in any holy place. The recent history of smoking is marked by the firs lawsuit against a cigarette manufacturer, in 1983, by Rose Cipollone. He was dying from lung cancer at that time, but before his death he won $400,000. The latest major act against smoking, and smokers, of course, was in 2003, when the state of New York banned smoking in any public place. Are YOU smoking? If you dont know already, let me enlighten you: you are slowly dying, because smoking kills. The drug called nicotine is can be found in any cigarette you want and this drug is a very powerful one. It is very addictive and quitting it can be done only by will. It is hard, but it isnt impossible. Here is a fact: around 400,000 dye each year from smoking related diseases. The foremost is the lung cancer. Lets say you dont care about yourself, but do you care about the others, about your family, your friends, because you are hurting them as well. It is called secondhand smoke, and it is just as dangerous as smoking itself. You already knew these facts? Look at this as a remember. Are you quitting?Well, if you tried to quit and you just couldnt, it means you either didnt really want to or you didnt know how to proceed. I wrote a few tips, to help you achieve this goal. Good luck, and remember, the most important thing is WILL. Decide upon a day, and just stop smoking. The best way to do it is to find someone to quit with you. As the old saying goes: The more the merrier. When you get the urge of smoking, dont. Wait for a few minutes before. In the spare time, try to do other things, like eating peanuts or eating gum. The old switch trick always pays off. Switch to a brand of cigarettes you hate and buy just one pack at a time. Change your routines. When you eat dinner, dont sit in the same place. At the begging eat only at home, or at a non-smoking friend, so you wont be able to have a quick one after dinner. Always have with you other things to put in your mouth, like a toothpick, or candy (watch for those cavities), or, usually the best, bubble-gum. At first you will feel sleepier and more tired than usual. Also you will be more short-tempered. These things pass in a week or so. Talk about what you are doing. Many smokers want to know how it is possible. Explain to them; discuss it over a drink, in the non-smokers section, of course. If at first you fail, try again. Dont worry, there are fewer people then you think who made it the first time. If nothing works, visit your doctor.

Nature's Energy Booster

Nature

Before you reach that cup of coffee or that bar of chocolate, which will probably only give you an energy boost for a couple of minutes and your probably feel worse after it as your body crashes again and you end up at square one again. Here is a breathing exercise you can use as a natural energy booster, find a place where you can relax either on a bed or upright in a chair, because this exercise can bring on a feeling of dizziness to the beginner trying it out please dont try to do it in a standing position or whilst in your car!Firstly get yourself comfortable position whether suiting in a chair or lying on your bed and keep your back in straight position so nothing is effecting the air flow. Close your mouth and start to breathe in and out through your nose in a rapid fashion, try to breath about 2-3 inhalations a second for about 10 seconds. I know that at the start it will probably feel awkward and you will fill your muscle are having to work harder (this is good for strengthening your diaphragm) but the more you practice it youll find it easier to do and when you feel comfortable and gotten over the dizzy sensations you can then increase the length of time you do this for, add up to 5 seconds more onto this but dont get carried away... its better to do small amounts over the day than try to do it over too long of a period. This exercise works because it helps to increase the amount of oxygen coming into your body and give the body and muscles the needed the oxygen they have been needing. While this exercise is great in the short term you really need to work on your breathing technique overall to improve your energy levels right through the day.

Using Acupuncture in Place of Modern Sleeping Aids

Using Acupuncture in Place of Modern Sleeping Aids

Sleeping aids are among the most common medications a person can find, ostensibly because of the sheer number of people who can't get to sleep. However, these new medications are starting to show side effects that people are not willing to deal with, such as drowsiness at inopportune times. These effects, along with the newfound interest in herbal and natural cures for modern ills, has prompted people to seek out alternative ways to fix their sleeping problems. Herbal remedies are more typical, but acupuncture has sometimes been used as one of those alternative sleeping aids people go crazy about.Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese art that has been used to serve as treatment for everything, from the common cold to stomach aches. This method is based on the Chinese principle of chi and meridians. Chi is the force of life, a sort of energy that flows in and through all living things, comparable to the concept of the Force, from the Star Wars films. In certain areas of the body are meridians, which serve as focal points for a person's chi. According to acupuncture practitioners, tapping into or altering these meridians can help improve or block the flow of chi, depending how it is done. Illnesses, according to this school of thought, are caused by imbalances in the flow of chi and other natural elements found in the body. So, how does this tie into being listed among other alternative "sleeping aids" ? Well, according to practitioners, an imbalance of both chi and the natural elements of the body can lead to all sorts of ailments, including insomnia and other sleep-related disorders. Acupuncture practitioners say that insomnia and lack of sleep can be caused by any number of subtle or drastic changes to the flow of the chi, which is exactly the sort of problem acupuncture is designed to remedy. Chronic pain, another frequent cause for a lack of sleep, is also something that can be treated through acupuncture. Despite all the skepticism it encounters in the West, Far Eastern cultures have been using acupuncture for centuries, and it can be difficult to argue with centuries' worth of concrete results. Most people are reluctant to try out something like acupuncture, primarily because they find the idea of sticking needles into their bodies to be disconcerting. However, the reality is that acupuncture produces little to no pain when performed by a skilled, qualified practitioner. Pain, discomfort, and other side effects stem from being treated by unqualified practitioners and quacks, who are starting to become more prevalent as the market share for these sorts of alternative sleeping aids expands. Acupuncture can also be used to treat other problems, such as stress and anxiety, at the same time that sleep problems are treated. This eliminates the need for someone to take multiple drugs to tackle multiple conditions, seeing as how acupuncture (properly administered) can be used to treat all those conditions in one go.It should be noted, however, that acupuncture is not designed to fix everything in just one session. Like any good treatment, it needs to be applied repeatedly for the effects to last. However, provided that the treatment is taken regularly for a certain period, then the blockage of the chi should eventually clear and any sleep problems that a person has would be solved. At least, until something blocks the chi all over again.

Are You Fit?

Are You Fit?

Fitness refers to ability of the body to function with vigor and alertness. Nutrition refers to the nurturing of our body, in our ability to keep it healthy and functioning as it is supposed to do. Our ability to provide the body with all the necessary food, vitamins, and minerals so that we continue to thrive in our daily life processes. But do we know if we are really fit? How do we tell? First, you might want to look at your exercise habits, if there are any. If there arent any exercise routines to examine, no fitness. Everyone, no matter what their age, benefits from exercise. It keeps our bodies conditioned, our mental sharpness working at top speed, and thanks to the physical aspect, we get a boost to our cardio health, extra calorie burn, and more oxygen to those cells!Do you take in more calories than your body needs? Are you supplementing your vitamins and minerals to make sure you are getting your recommended daily allowances? If youre not making the most basic of efforts to take care of your nutritional needs, you arent a fit individual. You may not look sick, you may not have any noticeable symptoms of ill-health, but youre not the fit and toned individual you could be.What about the stress levels in your life? Do work in an environment with high levels of stress? Is your personal life a source of comfort or does it add to your stress levels? Do you engage in some form of stress-relieving activity? Stress is the number on contributor to heart attacks and strokes, since they manage to speed up the affect of the real culprits. Stress is basically an out of control situation for most adults today. We manage to schedule every moment of our free time, and leave ourselves with no time for quiet reflection, or time to deal with lifes unexpected emergencies.Fitness requires us to examine more than just our exercise routine. The mere definition of fitness refers to the bodys ability to meet physical stresses. That includes coping with our day to day life, getting from the beginning of the day to the end, without being worn completely out. In order to be truly fit, we find ways to rid ourselves of built up stress, the kind that begins to affect our muscles, muscle tone, and composition. Massages are the best cure for ridding our bodies of the stress buildup that can occur, even with exercise regimens and detract from our overall fitness. Exercises that demand total body involvement are the best for maintaining and improving your level of fitness most effectively. Running, swimming, jogging, dancing, cycling, and very brisk walking are some of the more popular total body involvement exercises. There are so many occasions to stop and question our efforts at maintaining optimal health, that we usually dont even take the time to begin the examination. But it is beneficial to our overall health, the quality and quantity of our life, to make every effort to be fit, healthy, individuals.

ADD - Treatment Through Medication

In this third of a series of articles on ADD we're going to focus on treatments for ADD besides simple nutrition. The most common form of treatment for ADD is through medication. The underlying theory on ADD is that it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Through certain medications we can correct that imbalance and help a person with ADD to live a normal and productive life.PET scans of patients with ADD who are taking medication for their condition show that there is significant improvement in many cases.Medication that is given to treat ADD is to stimulate the production of two neurotransmitters known as dopamine and norephinephrine. These neurotransmitters are needed to carry a nerve impulse along a neuropathway. When one of these transmitters is under supplied the message is stopped short of it's intended destination. When this happens, whatever function that circuit is assigned to doesn't work properly.Your brain circuits are like a computer circuit. They are either on or off. When a circuit is on it makes something happen, like helping a child concentrate on a math problem or read a passage from a novel. When other circuits are on they prevent something from happening. For instance, some circuits prevent a child from becoming over emotional about an event or situation. If this circuit is supposed to be on but isn't because the transmitter didn't work then the child ends up getting upset where a child without ADD would have remained calm.Medicines that treat ADD are not sedatives or tranquilizers. They don't slow down the nervous system. What they do is stimulate various areas of the brain to be more active, actually the reverse of a sedative. By being more active, concentration and attention are improved. This medication helps circuits stay on when they're supposed to be on.The most common medication for ADD is Ritalin, which is a psychostimulant. The drug appears to work very well in treating ADD. However, it has gotten a lot of bad press even though it is relatively safe and very effective. Should Ritalin not work other drugs may be used like antidepressants and beta blockers. These have both been shown to be very effective for certain patients.Other drugs that have been used to treat ADD are Dexedrine, Desoxyn, Adderall, and Cylert, which are all stimulant drugs like Ritalin. The most common antidepressants are Desiprimine, Anafranil, Elavil, Tofranil, Wellbutrin, Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil. Then there are neuroleptics which were developed to treat serious mental disorders like psychosis and schizophrenia. In patients with severe ADD symptoms these have been very effective treatments. The most common of these drugs is Haldol and Mellaril. However the AMA cautions that these drugs should only be used in the most severe cases of ADD. Then you have mood stabilizers which are lithium based drugs that are very effective in certain cases in calming a child down. The number of drugs to treat ADD is numerous and growing everyday. With proper diagnosis and testing it is relatively easy to find the right drug for treating the disorder in each case.In the next article we'll discuss other treatments for ADD.
